Cast nylon rod is one of the most heavily used engineering plastics in Australian industry, prized for a rare combination of toughness, wear resistance and all-round versatility. Known chemically as Polyamide (PA), nylon pairs high mechanical strength with genuine impact toughness, so it holds up where more brittle materials would crack. A standout property is its behaviour around water and salt: unlike steel, it will not rust or corrode, which has made it a mainstay in aquaculture, marine and wet-processing environments. It is also electrically non-conductive, so it steps in for metal in electrical settings where safety matters.

We supply cast nylon rod, produced by casting rather than extrusion. Cast nylon offers higher strength, stiffness and hardness than extruded grades, with excellent creep and wear resistance, making it the preferred choice for larger diameters and heavy-duty bearing, bushing and wear applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cast and extruded nylon?

Cast nylon is produced by casting the polymer directly into rod form, giving higher strength, stiffness and hardness along with better wear resistance, particularly in larger diameters. Extruded nylon is pushed through a die and is generally used for smaller precision sizes. For bearings, bushes, gears and heavy wear parts, cast nylon is usually the better choice.

Which nylon grade should I choose?

Natural (white) suits most general engineering and is food safe. Black offers the same mechanical strength with added hardness. Oil-filled (yellow) is the pick for bearings and bushes that run fast under load, as the built-in lubrication reduces friction and extends wear life.

Is nylon suitable for wet or marine use?

Yes. Nylon does not rust or corrode, which makes it a popular steel replacement in aquaculture, marine and wet-processing applications. Note that nylon does absorb a small amount of moisture over time, which can slightly affect dimensions in precision parts.
