Description

Acetal Rod (POM)

Acetal rod (Polyoxymethylene, or POM) is a tough engineering thermoplastic chosen for precision machined components where rigidity, tight tolerances and smooth low friction surfaces matter. It machines cleanly, holds its shape under load and wears slowly, which is why fabricators across Australian manufacturing, food processing, mining, packaging and general engineering reach for it on bearing, gear and wear applications. Across industry it turns up under several trade names, among them Delrin®, Sustarin®, Tecaform®, Ertacetal®, Acetron®, Ensital® and Zellamid®.

We stock acetal in POM-C copolymer, a grade prized for even machining right through thick sections with none of the internal voids that can open up in homopolymer bar when diameters get large. Every acetal rod we supply carries FDA and RoHS approval, so it is cleared for food contact and food processing duties.

Key Features of Acetal Rod (POM):

  • High mechanical strength and rigidity
  • Low friction and excellent wear resistance in both wet and dry environments
  • High dimensional stability
  • Good chemical resistance to solvents and fuels
  • Low moisture absorption

  • Excellent machinability
  • High impact resistance, even at low temperatures
  • FDA and RoHS approved

Applications:

  • Precision gears and bearings
  • Bushings and pulleys
  • Wear strips, wear pads and guide rails
  • Pump and valve components
  • Jigs and fixtures
  • Conveyor and packaging machinery parts
  • Food processing components
  • Electrical components and insulators
  • Automotive parts

Cut, machined and dispatched from our Moorebank workshop. Stocked sizes are dispatched the same week. Our acetal rod is available in a wide range of diameters, giving you the versatility needed for almost any engineering application. If you require additional customisation, we offer machining and turning services to meet your exact specifications, upload a DXF or send us your drawing for a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are acetal and Delrin the same?

They belong to the same POM family and behave alike in most respects, but the two resin types each have a niche. Copolymer (POM-C) holds tolerances better thanks to a slightly less crystalline structure, shrugs off hot water and caustic high pH washdowns, and runs with less friction and longer wear life when things get wet. Homopolymer (POM-H, the Delrin® type) trades some of that for extra rigidity, carrying a higher flexural modulus as temperatures climb, a touch more tensile and impact strength at room temperature, and a harder surface that lowers friction slightly.

How strong is acetal?

Acetal delivers tensile strength in the region of 9,500 psi alongside high surface hardness and reliable dimensional stability.

Does acetal absorb water?

It barely takes up moisture even in damp service, and resists a broad spread of chemicals and solvents.

Is acetal recyclable?

Yes, acetal can be reground and recycled at end of life.

Is acetal food grade?

Yes, our acetal is FDA approved and suitable for food contact applications.

What temperature can acetal handle?

Acetal has a service temperature limit around 90 to 100°C (melting point approximately 175°C) and is not UV stabilised, so it is not recommended for prolonged outdoor or high temperature exposure. For high temperature or UV applications, contact our team for alternative materials.
