Grey Tint Polycarbonate Sheet

Grey Tint Polycarbonate Sheet

Price range: $188.65 through $862.40

Grey Tint Polycarbonate combines the virtually unbreakable strength of standard polycarbonate with a functional solar control tint to provide a natural shading effect. Designed to reduce glare and solar heat gain, it is the standard specification for boat windows, pergola roofing, and architectural privacy glazing. Available in full sheets or cut to size.

Description

Product Overview

Grey Tint Polycarbonate is an engineered glazing material designed to balance high impact resistance with effective solar control. Unlike clear safety glass or standard acrylic, this material offers a “smokey” grey tint that significantly reduces glare and solar heat gain without compromising optical clarity from the inside looking out.

We supply high-grade UV-stabilised Grey Polycarbonate, making it the ideal choice for Australian outdoor applications where heat reduction and privacy are required. It is 250 times stronger than glass, making it virtually immune to hail, vandalism, and heavy impact.

Key Properties & Practical Benefits

  • Solar Control: Reduces light transmission to approximately 20–50% (depending on thickness), significantly lowering heat build up in enclosed spaces like pergolas or covered walkways.
  • Glare Reduction: Softens harsh direct sunlight, improving visibility for marine vessels and machine operators.
  • Impact Strength: Retains the same “virtually unbreakable” rating as clear polycarbonate.
  • Privacy: Provides a “smoked” aesthetic that limits visibility from the outside during the day while maintaining outward vision.
  • UV Stabilised: Co-extruded UV layer protects the sheet from Australian UV radiation, preventing brittleness and yellowing.

Common Applications:

  • Marine Glazing: Boat windows, hatch covers, and spray shields (reduces water glare).
  • Architectural Roofing: Pergolas, covered walkways, and barrel vaults (reduces heat underneath).
  • Heavy Machinery: Excavator and crane cabin windows (reduces operator eye strain).
  • Security: Privacy glazing for offices, gates, and secure facilities.
  • Electrical: Smoked covers for LED displays and instrumentation.

Material Selection: Grey Tint Polycarbonate vs. Grey Tint Acrylic

While both materials look similar at a glance (smoked/tinted transparent plastic), they behave very differently. Use this guide to ensure you are specifying the right material for your project.

Feature Grey Tint Polycarbonate Grey Tint Acrylic (Perspex)
Impact Strength High. Virtually unbreakable. Withstands waves, heavy hail, and hammer blows. Moderate. Stronger than glass but will crack or shatter under heavy impact.
Scratch Resistance Lower. Softer surface. Scratches easily High. Harder surface. More resistant to swirl marks and cleaning scratches.
Rigidity Flexible. Can be cold curved. thinner sheets may flex in wind. Rigid. Stiffer panel. Stays flatter over larger spans.
Edge Finish Matte/Sawn. Edges cannot be polished clear. Gloss. Edges can be diamond or flame polished to a high shine.
Best Use Boat windows, excavator glazing, hail proof roofing. Boat Windows, High end cosmetic displays, privacy screens where aesthetics rule.

Machining & Fabrication

  • Cutting: Can be cut with standard timber tools (circular saw with plastic blade) or CNC routed.
  • Drilling: Does not crack or shatter when drilled, making it safer to install than acrylic.
  • Thermoforming: Can be draped or cold-curved to suit curved window frames or roofing profiles.

Limitations

  • Light Transmission: Be aware that as thickness increases, the tint becomes darker and light transmission decreases. A 9.5mm sheet will appear much darker than a 3mm sheet.
  • Scratching: Like all polycarbonate, the surface is softer than glass. Care must be taken during cleaning (use microfiber only) to prevent swirl marks.
